One Man. One God. One Plan.
Written by Sherri Bergmann
Scripture tells us that Christ played an active role in creating the world. Understanding what went on behind the scenes when we were created helps us to appreciate the magnitude of His love for us that led Him to live as a man among us and to willingly be crucified on the cross to take away our sins.
In divine wisdom, God—Father, Son, and Spirit—crafted the world as a place where humanity could dwell, know Him, and reflect His glory. Everything in our solar system and the heavens was created to support our ability to survive. Not only in the physical sense—needing air, water, food, and the precise conditions to sustain and balance life—but also in the spiritual sense.
Christ existed before the world and created the world, and all that is in it.
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made." 1 John 1:1–3.
Paul says about Christ: “For by Him, all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created through him and for him.” Colossians 1:16.
Including Satan.
Christ knew Satan before man was created. Angels were created before the world to be ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation (Hebrews 1:14).
Because angels had free will, one took notice—Lucifer, also known as the 'morning star,' became proud and desired to be worshiped like God, wanting to take His place. He seized the opportunity to rebel and swayed other angels to follow him. As a result, God cast him out of heaven and he became known as Satan, and the angels who followed him are known as fallen angels or demons. Together, they set out to destroy what God had created and to lead humanity away from Him. This is gleaned from Ezekial 28 and Isaiah 14:12-17, both of which have literal historical context, as well as a symbolic or theological interpretation that many theologians commonly associate with the fall of Satan. Fallen angels are also mentioned in Jude 1:6 and 2 Peter 2:4.
Satan successfully tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden, bringing about humanity’s fall into disobedience. Since then, humans have been influenced, deceived, and even destroyed by Satan and his demons.
"Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." 1 Peter 5:8.
Christ sustains real life. Proverbs 8 poetically portrays Wisdom as a personification of God's divine attributes, with many interpreting it as referring to Christ, who was present with the Father in creation. In this passage, Wisdom, speaking as God’s agent, invites humanity to choose life through a relationship with God. Proverbs 8:35 says, 'Those who find me find life,' which echoes the words of Jesus in John 14:6, where He declares, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life.'
Choosing Satan leads to death, physically and spiritually. Without Christ we decay. Christ understood this.
Christ knew what He would endure as a man. Jesus stepped in to atone for our disobedience. As One with His father, Jesus agreed to become incarnate—born as a man—to live with us, experiencing the fullness of human life, and show us the way to Him. But, unlike us, He did not give into sin, and lived perfectly to reconcile us to the Father.
He was willing to undergo excruciating agony and die for our sins, then to rise again, conquering death. Those who choose Him receive the gift of the Holy Spirit living inside them, and salvation to live with Him forever.
“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” Philippians 2:5-8
"For I have come down from heaven, not to do my will, but to do the will of him who sent me." John 6:38
“No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again.” John 10:18
Christ wanted us to know the Father. To drive the point home, Jesus had told his followers, “If you have seen me, you have seen the Father.” John 14:9, “I and the Father are One.” John 10:30.
John 17 reveals Jesus' enduring love in His final wish before His death on the cross, “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.” John 17:24.
When He was crucified, the curtain in the holy of holies was torn, representing Christ giving us direct access to Him.
At the cross, He defeated death and Satan so we could, too.
“Now since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity, so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.” Hebrews 2:14-15
"And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 1He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.” Colossians 2:15.
“Jesus, having gone into heaven, is at God's right hand, with angels, authorities, and powers subject to him.” 1 Peter 3:22
Today, He lives. For those who open their hearts to Him, He gives life eternal life and helps us through this life. He helps us through our days of fear, pain, confusion, grief, and frees us from the snares of sin. He gives us deep peace and joy that only He can give, even during the darkest storms of life. He also helps us to experience and genuinely love because God is love (1 John 4:8).
“Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen.” Revelations 1:17-18
The answers to everything we need to get through and rise above this life, and to have eternal life, are all in the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
