Do You Hear What These Children Are Saying?
Written by Sherri Bergmann
“Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him.
“Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read, ‘From the lips of children and infants you, Lord, have called forth your praise’?” Matthew 21:16.
Although this was in reference to when Jesus was older and after he drove out those who had turned the temple into a bargain market, and healed the blind and the lame, the children saw him for who He was and praised, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” recognizing Him as the prophetic Messiah.
This infuriated the chief priests and teachers of the law because they saw those who were the most impressionable in their society praising Jesus.
Today’s children are influenced by many things. Even though during Christmas time, the tradition of presents, Santa, sweets, and holiday decorations are a part of the excitement of the season, because the Bible instructs parents to raise their children to know Him, Christian parents devote their efforts to remind their children the real reason of the season.
Christian parents know the value of teaching their child that the One born in a manger is the One who was the prophetic Savior who came to be with us, and died a human death on the cross, but rose from the dead and claimed victory over death so we could be with Him forever. Emmanuel, God With Us.
“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6
“All your children will be taught by the Lord, and great will be their peace.” Isaiah 54:13.
“Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me and keep all my commands always, so that it might go well with them and their children forever!” Deuteronomy 5:29
Thus, parents know that if they raise their child up in Christ, even if they stumble, they will regain solid footing. They also know their child will experience a peace the world does not have that will make them strong and carry them through difficult times, and that things are better for them as opposed to if they did not follow Christ. They also know by the profession of their belief and faith, they will be included as part of God’s family.
In the video below are clips of various Foothills Church kids, sent in from their parents asking them what Christmas is all about and why it is important. Some are clearly excited about things like presents and candy canes, but they also recognize the real reason for the season.
Take a few minutes, and enjoy these clips. Sometimes during the holiday frenzy, hearing from the kids' perspective is exactly what we need to slow down and appreciate the season.
